the crash happened last night at a training complex north of yuma near the chocolate mountains on the california border. the aircraft and ah-1 whiskey cobra and a uh-1 yankee huey were of reportedly conducting routine training operations. joined new by fox's mark martinez who is live inium a. mark, any idea how exactly this happened? >> reporter: not yet, brian. investigators here from yuma from the air station, the marine corps air station are on the ground at the crash site, about 65 miles northwest of here. they are trying to find out what may have caused that deadly mid-air collision between the two helicopters. that killed seven marines, including one based here atium a. we have video of the crash site to show you where the helicopters came crashing down. from the commander of the base today, he told us that these helicopters were part of the training exercise, a very large training exercise and the pilots both were aware of each other. they were flying as part of the group during the mission last night when, somehow, they ended up colloiding mid-air around 8:00 and crashing to the ground.
